Occupational Hygiene

Occupational Hygiene is an area of the Health and Safety profession which specifically looks at the recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards. This incorporates the use of scientific principals and methodologies in assessment procedures in order to evaluate levels of risk.

The Occupational Hygiene Unit of Newcastle Occupational Health can trace their history back to their Newcastle University origins in the late 1950’s –the very early years of the Occupational Hygiene profession in the UK . Since then the unit has developed and is now incorporated within Newcastle Primary Care Trust, although close links to the University still exist.

The current team of qualified professionals have over forty years of experience in the field. They are represented on the British Occupational Hygiene Society’s Special Interest Group (SIG) for the NHS. The Unit is also involved with EC Commissioned research projects relating to environmental and health & safety issues as well as ongoing internal research projects.
