Occupational Health : UKOOA Medicals

It is a UKCOOA policy that offshore employees must be examined periodically and classified as medically fit to work in the offshore environment.

Assessments of fitness to work offshore should be carried out by a physician who is approved by UKOOA

The purpose of the medical assessment is to ensure as far as is reasonably practicable that offshore personnel are medically fit to work at remote and isolated locations.

The medical will consist of the taking of the medical history followed by a physical examination which includes a hearing and lung function test.

Frequency of examination

  • Up to the age 39 years – 3 yearly
  • Age 40 to 49 – 2 yearly
  • Age 50 and over – annually

The examining physician will issue a medical certificate if the employee is found to be fit for offshore work.

Employers have a responsibility to hold a current valid ‘Certificate of Fitness’ for each offshore worker.  It is the responsibility of he employer and the employee to ensure that a valid certificate is maintained.
