Newcastle Occupational Health and Hygiene offer drug and alcohol screening.
The screening may be carried out by an employer to ensure compliance with a corporate Drug and Alcohol Policy. This must include guidance with dealing with a potential positive test result. Screening can also identify whether potential employees are affected by substance abuse or misuse.
Testing can help to ensure that any employee is not affecting their own, or others’, health, safety and welfare, and their capability to carry out their work through substance misuse or abuse.
The screening is carried out in our department under stringent guidelines to ensure that testing is legally defensible.
The drug and alcohol testing involves the receipt of a urine sample, and assessment of relevant history from the employee. The sample is then tested for illegal drugs and alcohol, taking into account prescription and non-prescription drug use.
A Registered Nurse undertakes the 30-minute testing according to a step-by-step protocol; this ensures transparency and informed consent from the employee. The privacy and dignity of the employee is also maintained throughout the testing procedure.
The screening process prevents any opportunity for tampering or adulteration of the specimen, and avoids sample contamination.
