Newcastle Occupational Health and Hygiene : Health and Safety

With the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work act 1974 the emphasis on health and safety in the workplace was given a higher profile.

This developed and evolved over the years with the introduction of a number of pieces of legislation including the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992 to name a few.

The purpose of this and other appropriate legislation is to prevent people from being harmed at work. There are however other benefits from investing in health and safety. Employee’s moral is often boosted by feeling valued, the companies profile is enhanced by a better health and safety record and savings are made with less downtime and less litigation. This has put the onus on organisations to ensure that they are compliant with the legislation. The amount of legislation is phenomenal so finding the relevant pieces and deciphering it can often be a daunting task.
